Webday Wednesdays - S, M, L, XL – Different Envelopes, Same Criteria

Les inscriptions sont fermées pour cet événement.
For the month of May, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of Advanced Building Envelopes.

S, M, L, XL – Different Envelopes, Same Criteria
Date: May 1, 2019
Presenter: Deborah Byrne

SESSION:
Recent case studies of our current small, medium, large and extra large Passive House (PH) projects, new and renovation, will be presented. How we tackled the challenges of the varying sizes and envelope types will be illustrated and discussed. We draw particular attention to the usually accepted PH theories that get turned on their head for the large-scale projects such as Passive Solar strategies and designing for cooling, not heating. We highlight the different challenges in each building typology and the approach that was taken for each building to achieve the PH targets, each example having their own nuances and a different approach to achieving the Total PH Energy Demand requirements.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Participants will learn what makes a good Passive House Envelope and what design considerations are key to a successful, affordable and constructible envelope.
  • In PH the quality of the envelope is key to meeting the aggressive energy targets. Participants should be able to assess the risks to proper PH Envelope Development, in design and on site.
  • Participants should be able to make an assessment on what the key design drivers will be for projects of a certain size and type and occupancy beyond the envelope requirements.

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

When Deborah Byrne joined Kearns Mancini Architects Inc. (KMAI), she brought with her 15 years of experience in structural engineering, project and construction management, Passive House design and construction, and energy efficient design. 4 years on she has developed a Passive House Design team and workflow that is fully integrated with the Architectural design process. She is a resolute problem solver with a broad range of experience and her understanding of building physics makes it possible for her to align the design with the core values of sustainability, comfort and affordability. She maintains true to her belief “that we can always do better.” Deborah earned her Honours Degree in Structural Engineering from Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland and the title of Chartered Engineer, CEng, from the Institute of Engineers, Ireland in 2007 and became a Certified Passive House Designer (2010) and Trainer (2012) prior to moving to Toronto in 2012. Her focus on rigorous integrated building design makes it possible to increase building comfort, health, and resiliency and reduce building maintenance, operations and energy aligning with core values of sustainability, comfort and affordability.
