Webday Wednesdays - Net Zero Buildings the Easy Way

 Les inscriptions sont fermées pour cet événement.
For the month of February, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of architecture and energy.

Net Zero Buildings the Easy Way
Date: Wednesday, February 20, 2019
Experience Level: Introductory
Presenter: Jacob Komar, P.Eng

SESSION:
This webinar will discuss how buildings can achieve Net Zero Energy the "easy way". Net Zero building design does not require insane envelope targets and huge costs. The webinar will show that using geothermal heating and cooling systems is one of the only ways to reach net zero and eliminates the need for really tight envelopes and overly complicated mechanical systems. Using real world examples from past net zero projects, including the Mosaic Centre (Alberta’s first attempt at a commercial net zero building), the webinar will show that net zero energy is not necessarily a hard a target to aim for.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Summarize why Net Zero Energy is not necessarily a difficult target;
  • Restate why net zero energy does not need to be cost prohibitive;
  • Identify how geothermal systems can be the easiest and sometimes the only way to reach net zero in a commercial building;
  • Explain why new buildings should be electrified.

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

Jacob Komar, P.Eng. is the Principal and lead mechanical engineer at Revolve Engineering Inc. and is a specialist in Net Zero building design, energy modelling and geothermal systems. Jacob has helped design over ten Net Zero buildings and more than 35 commercial geothermal systems on a variety of projects ranging from multi-story commercial office buildings to apartment buildings and government facilities. Jacob focuses solely on building energy consulting, Net Zero building designs and renewable mechanical systems (including geothermal). Jacob's passion for designing sustainable, energy-efficient buildings is evident in each of his projects and he always strives to push the envelope in energy efficient designs.
