The RAIC is honoured to award the 2021 Gold Medal—the highest distinction the Institute can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture to exemplary architectural duo Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe.

Architects Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe, both born in 1958, are the founding partners of Toronto-based Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. Their work expresses a deep concern for the cultural and spiritual significance of architecture, landscape, and design. To date, their built projects have been recognized with fifteen Governor General’s Medals for Architecture and an American Institute of Architects National Honor Award, along with many other professional accolades.

Four professionals who have significantly impacted the architectural practice around the world, have been named Honorary Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). The 2021 Honorary Fellows exemplify the tremendous impact that architects have—not only on the built environment—but public life and the world around them.

The National Urban Design Awards of the RAIC, Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) recognize excellence in urban design and demonstrate its importance to the general public. In the first year of a two-year cycle, Canadian municipalities will administer a local, RAIC/CIP/CSLA endorsed, Urban Design Award Program. The municipal cycle is now open for submissions.
