Canadian Architect Awards Open – Entries due September 11

For 56 years, Canadian Architect has sponsored an annual national awards program, the only national awards that recognize projects in the design stage. The Awards of Excellence are open to all architects registered in Canada and to Canadian architectural graduates for buildings designed in Canada and abroad. Foreign architects are permitted to submit, provided they have partnered with a Canadian-registered architect.

This year’s deadline for submissions is Monday, September 11, 2023.

Projects must be in the design stage, scheduled for construction or under construction but not substantially complete by September 7, 2023. All projects must be commissioned by a client with the intention to build the submitted proposal. All building types and concisely presented urban design schemes are eligible.

Awards are given for architectural design excellence. Jurors will consider the scheme’s response to the client’s program, site, geographic and/or urban context. They will evaluate its physical organization, form, composition, building systems, concept, process, structure, materials, environmental features and/or demonstration of social awareness.

This year’s competition also includes the sixth annual Canadian Architect Photo Awards of Excellence, which challenges professional and non-professional architectural photographers to showcase their best images of a Canadian building.

Enbridge Gas, based in Ontario, is Canada’s largest natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company, with more than 170 years of service to customers. For over 20 years, Enbridge Gas has offered customers energy efficiency programs to help them use energy wisely. Between 1995 and 2019, Enbridge Gas’ energy efficiency programs reduced customer consumption by 27.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas, which is enough natural gas savings to serve nearly 12 million homes for one year. These gas savings have resulted in a reduction of 51.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, roughly equal to removing 11.2 million cars from the road for one year.

Enbridge Gas developed the Savings by Design program in response to the Ontario Energy Board’s direction to integrate market transformation into their demand-side management programs. The commercial, residential and affordable housing streams of the Savings by Design program provide industry expertise, technical tools, and financial incentives to improve energy performance, lower operating costs and build new construction projects for a sustainable and resilient future.

Enbridge Gas is owned by Enbridge Inc., a Canadian-based leader in energy transportation and distribution. Learn more at enbridgegas.com.

Come join us from October 10th to 15th for a design festival known as Edmonton Design Week 2023. This festival will shine a light on the local design community, explore the role design plays in everyday life, and showcase how design is helping to tackle the challenges of the future. During this week-long festival, the public can view and interact with all facets of the Edmonton design community, including art, architecture, industrial design, furniture design, fashion, graphic design, and media. These disciplines will be showcased through interventions, talks, pop-ups, parties, and exhibitions at venues strategically positioned in the heart of downtown Edmonton. MADE (Media Architecture Design in Edmonton) is the primary facilitator of Edmonton Design Week while supporting, coordinating, and promoting events hosted by individuals and businesses in the design community.

The coming together and collaboration of a variety of different design practices to advocate for creative disciplines as a whole is the foundation of MADE. This is why the theme for EDW 2023 is MELD – the blending of elements into a cohesive whole. In this way, Design Week can create opportunities for new ideas and creativity between different design disciplines that normally may not interact. By creating more meaningful connections between designers, the City of Edmonton will benefit as a whole.
