As there are fewer than twenty Indigenous Architects in Canada, the Technical Standard & Best Practice Guide for Spiritual Spaces report and visioning process, could form the basis and set a precedent for future Indigenous-Non-Indigenous engagement and Co-Design. Opening Event: Inspiring Commitment and Engagement to Climate Action

This will be a moderated panel discussion followed by a Q&A.

Indigenous Architecture Day

This two-part session, presented by the RAIC Indigenous Task Force & Truth and Reconciliation Task Force, will include presentations and a roundtable featuring recent Indigenous graduates of architecture as well as a presentation on the RAIC's proposal for a UIA (International Union of Architects) Indigenous Peoples Work Programme .

RAIC and CCA Special Event: No Monuments?

A live virtual discussion between Matthew Hickey, Tiffany Shaw-Collinge and Joseph Kunkel, moderated by Lev Bratishenko, CCA Curator Public.

Most often produced by artists and managed by politicians and public servants, monuments are increasingly a subject of interest for architects interested in (and struggling with) their positions in public debates around historic and ongoing injustice, and the construction of public memory.

The RAIC would like to pass along the announcement of this important initiative from our partner, Rise for Architecture.

• Canadians want accessible, beautiful and sustainable communities
• Canadians want more inclusive communities and improvements to accountability for creating them, a new Angus Reid Institute and Rise for Architecture survey finds.
• They are also widely supportive of new roles which would be responsible for encouraging better design outcomes, such as a Chief Architect or similar title, in both their community (70%) and province (56%).  

What if design could address big issues like the climate crisis, housing affordability and reconciliation with Indigenous communities? 

Rise for Architecture hopes to develop new policies that enable better outcomes 
for all Canadians, inspired by the 30 countries leading the way with architecture policy. 

The voice of Canadians is essential to this conversation.

Thriving Forests & Regenerative Built Environments -The first event of its kind hosted by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and Pilot Projects Collaborative (Wood at Work).

This September, join us at this important symposium that will engage participants on multi-disciplinary questions surrounding relationships between forest legacies past and future, and the design, construction, and stewardship of our built environments.

A series of participants will discuss topics such as Indigenous perspectives on sustainable forestry, the carbon sequestration potential of Canadian forests and wood products, community perspectives on regenerative built environments, and the roles that architects can play in integrating these considerations into their practices.

An Elegant New Passive House Total Precast Concrete Design Has Re-introduced the YWCA to the Artistic Crown Point Neighbourhood

The architectural intent of the Putman Family YWCA Passive House project, was to be part of the existing community, be reflective of Hamilton and use local manufacturers and pay homage to the surrounding contextual fabric.

The building consists of a five-storey, 50-unit multi-family social housing component with a basement Community and Enterprise Centre podium. The design also included multiple outdoor amenities that vary in privacy and program led by YWCA Hamilton. The structure was built to Passive House (PH) International Standard, which consumes 90% less energy than conventional buildings.

The building consists of a unique total precast concrete system with a double-wythe insulated panel system which forms the thermal, air-tight, structural, weathering, and aesthetic façade in one factory-built component. The precast concrete hollowcore floor elements allow for a lower depth to span ratio and provide the lowest GWP of any concrete floor system.

The PH Total Precast Concrete building offers maximum health, comfort, and energy efficiency, aligning with the YWCA’s core values of providing women with comfortable, healthy, secure, resilient, and safe housing.
