Emcee of the President’s Dinner and Awards Gala: Dee Dee Taylor Eustace

The RAIC is pleased to announce Dee Dee Taylor Eustace will act as emcee at the President's Dinner and Awards Gala at the Festival of Architecture.

Dee Dee is a Toronto architect, interior designer, developer, and project manager who has brought design to a wide audience through television, radio, and newspapers – including as a three-time guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Dee Dee’s firm, Taylor Hannah Architect, specializes in the residential and hospitality sectors and her projects have been published in magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Style at Home, and Traditional Home.

POP // CAN // CRIT 2019: Education and Emergence of Architects in Canada

The annual, national POP // CAN // CRIT symposium will be held in Toronto on October 26, as an official RAIC Festival event. POP // CAN // CRIT 2019: The Education and Emergence of Architects in Canada will focus on issues and experiences related to architecture students, interns, and emerging practitioners. It will ask who the future of Canadian architecture is, and what are the resources and supports they need to succeed.

All registered participants are eligible to receive RAIC continuing education hours.

Governor General’s Medals in Architecture: Call for entries

The RAIC and the Canada Council for the Arts invite architects to participate in the competition for the 2020 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture.

Awarded every two years, the 12 medals recognize and celebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects – big or small – by Canadian architects.

The Governor General’s Medals in Architecture are among this country’s most prestigious and coveted architectural awards.

Submission deadline: December 6, 2019 at 12:00 a.m. ET.

Deadline extension: National Urban Design Awards

The deadline to submit for the 2020 National Urban Design Awards has been extended to midnight ET on December 19, 2019, to allow municipalities with an Urban Design Awards program to participate.

Do you use agile project management?

We want your feedback: Project management methods in architectural practice

Traditional project management in architectural practice works to develop a plan, then execute the plan. We strive to predict the scope of work, schedule, and cost. Clients want to know “what, when, and how much?” before we start. This traditional approach is called “predictive” project management.

Other industries, most prominently the software development industry, has almost universally adopted “agile” project management. This approach, called “adaptive” project management, does not attempt to spend valuable resources predicting project outcomes but gets to work rapidly producing deliverables. It is about deliverables over planning, people over process, and change over certainty. Some construction companies are adopting LEAN construction; an offshoot of this results-focused approach.

We want to hear from you. Has your firm adopted an agile methodology? Are you or have you considered it?

RAIC and AAA working together for 2020 events

Staff of the RAIC and the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) met recently to coordinate the planning of events in 2020 and find ways to work together more closely.

Giovanna Boniface, RAIC VP of National Affairs, visited Edmonton, AB on September 16 and 17 where she met with AAA’s Executive Director Barbara Bruce, Hon. MRAIC, and AAA staff.

The RAIC Conference on Architecture 2020 will take place in Edmonton from June 3 to 7, 2020. The Banff Session, hosted by the AAA, is scheduled for May 7 to 9, 2020.

“Because our events are within one month of each other and in the same province, we are collaborating so that both events are successful,” says Boniface. “We will continue to meet regularly to share information and find ways to work together and support each other’s events.”

• Brian Palmquist, MRAIC, of Vancouver, BC, has published the second edition of his book called An Architect's Guide to Construction — Enduring Ways in the Age of Immediacy.

The book is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format.

• Richard J. Currie, PhD, has been presented with Honorary RAIC Membership.

Diarmuid Nash, PP/FRAIC, Chancellor of the RAIC College of Fellows and Susan Ruptash, FRAIC, RAIC Regional Director, Ontario Southwest presented Honorary Membership to Currie on September 19 in Toronto, ON.

Currie is a well-known businessman and philanthropist in New Brunswick. He was awarded Honorary Membership in 2018, but he was unable to attend the ceremony at the Festival of Architecture in Saint John, NB.

Call for abstracts: CSLA congress

The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) invites submissions for presentations to be made at their congress in Calgary, AB, June 18 to 20, 2020. The theme of the congress is The Essence of Time.

The deadline for submissions is November 6.

Canadian Architecture Forums on Education

The Canadian Council of University Schools of Architecture (CCUSA) is hosting the Canadian Architecture Forums on Education (CAFÉ), a series of consultations at architecture schools aimed at informing an architecture policy for Canada.

Twelve schools of architecture will participate in five forums across the country to discuss and debate the role of architectural education and research in shaping Canada’s future.

The International Union of Architects invites RAIC members to submit their projects for the Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards, which was established to promote inspiring examples of buildings and places that have created socially sustainable environments through high-quality architectural design.

The deadline for submissions is October 30.
