RAIC College of Fellows elects a new Chancellor

Diarmuid Nash, FRAIC/PP, a Toronto architect and Past President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), has been elected Chancellor of the RAIC College of Fellows for a three-year term beginning May 2017.

Nash succeeds Barry Johns, FRAIC, an Edmonton architect who has served two three-year terms from 2011 to 2017.

“I am deeply honoured to have been elected Chancellor of the College of Fellows,” said Nash.

Bahá’í Temple of South America wins Innovation in Architecture award

A luminous worship space designed and built with the creative use of computer modeling, measuring, and fabrication software, and custom glass, has won the RAIC Innovation in Architecture Award for 2017.
The Bahá’í Temple of South America, by Hariri Pontarini Architects of Toronto, is a domed structure set in the foothills of the Andes Mountains outside Santiago, Chile. Nine monumental veils frame an open worship space that expresses a faith of inclusion and accommodates up to 600 visitors.


Announcing the recipient of the 2017 Green Building Award

A public library in suburban Montreal that combines high-performance standards with design quality and responsiveness to community needs will receive the 2017 Green Building Award.

The award, given by the RAIC and the Canada Green Building Council®, recognizes outstanding achievement in buildings that are environmentally responsible and promote the health and wellbeing of users.

The Bibliothèque du Boisé in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent borough, inaugurated in 2013, was designed by Cardinal Hardy* | Labonté Marcil | Eric Pelletier architecte* in consortium. (Eric Pelletier architecte and Cardinal Hardy joined Lemay in 2013 and 2014 respectively.)




RAIC members at Vimy

Jonathan Bisson, MRAIC, Director for the Quebec Region of the RAIC, attended the opening of the new Visitor Education Center of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France on April 8.

The building and exhibition were designed by Robert Martin, MRAIC, of RMA architects in Ottawa in collaboration with Bisson | associés – Daniel Castonguay of Quebec City. The project management was under the direction of PWGSC and the construction, exterior landscaping, and exhibition of the new building was by French company Léon Grosse in collaboration with the Paris-based architect John Lampros.

Also visiting the Canadian Vimy Memorial this year were: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Governor General David Johnston, Minister of Veterans Affairs Kent Hehr, Prince Charles, and his sons William Duke of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales.


Fellows at the Festival

The 2017 RAIC Fellows Convocation will take place May 25th during the annual Festival of Architecture in Ottawa at the Canadian Museum of History. The keynote speaker will be American architect Jeanne Gang, who will be inducted as an Honorary Fellow.

Don’t miss the Indigenous Architecture and Design Symposium

The RAIC’s first International Indigenous Architecture and Design Symposium takes place in Ottawa on Saturday, May 27.

The symposium promises to be an exceptional event with an estimated 120 delegates, including international and Canadian Indigenous architects, allied design and building professionals, students, and interns.


Call for entries: Toronto Urban Design Awards

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2017 Toronto Urban Design Awards. Deadline is Thursday, May 4 at 4 p.m.

The awards recognize a wide range of projects that demonstrate improvements to the built environment and quality of public places in the city. Entry details and program information is available at www.toronto.ca/tuda

Recipients of the Toronto Urban Design Awards will be invited to submit to the National Urban Design awards, a program of the RAIC, the Canadian Institute of Planners, and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in co-operation with Canadian municipalities.
