About the course
This webinar is part of the 2026 Conference On-Demand Bundle Series
Housing meets fire station in this innovative mixed-use pilot project of Calgary's Integrated Civic Facilities Program. The Varsity Multi-Service Centre unites homes with essential community services in a dense, human-scaled, urban development. Two architects unpack eight years of planning, design, and construction, revealing the process of delivering this infrastructure intervention.
By the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recall the goals of Calgary’s Integrated Civic Facility Program, and the planning process it uses, enabling attendees to apply these principles when co-locating diverse or seemingly unrelated programs in their own projects.
- Distinguish the roles and responsibilities of the two architects, enabling them to define their own roles, and accountabilities within complex, multidisciplinary project teams.
- Describe the iterative design process used by MBAC, providing a model that other architects can reference on projects with complex programs and multiple interest holders.
- Apply the key lessons from The Varsity Multi-Service Centre project to their own work on mixed-use developments.
