Discussion Topics:
We'll discuss the purpose of the schematic design phase, which is to resolve the results of pre-design investigations into a concept of "what will be built." This chapter emphasizes the importance of synthesizing various, often competing requirements into an architectural expression that represents the character of the site, space planning requirements, the client's objectives, and the architect's design approach. It covers the integration of sensitive site development, building envelope characteristics, and mechanical and electrical systems.
We'll explore the design development phase, where the selected scheme from the schematic design phase is refined and developed in more detail. This chapter discusses how design projects are becoming "front-end loaded," with more work required during schematic design and design development. It emphasizes the importance of detailed technical analysis, obtaining planning approvals, and managing client and stakeholder engagement through clearly defined deliverables.
