Les inscriptions sont fermées pour cet événement.
For the month of April, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of Design Processes.

Rethinking Community Engagement for Design
Date: April 17, 2019
Presenter: Paul Fast + Marni Robinson

SESSION:
The expectations and context around how we as designers engage with the public is rapidly shifting. Design problems are being increasingly complex and require different ways of engaging with stakeholders to build consensus. To address these changes, HCMA Architecture + Design has reinvented their approach to engagement by bringing on professional engagement specialists and in-house communications design teams. Paul and Marni will provide an overview of the firm’s engagement philosophy as a response to these changing conditions. The majority of HCMA’s work over the past 20 years has been large scale, public projects. Paul and Marni will use several of these projects as case studies to demonstrate how applying innovative new techniques and leveraging different perspectives has resulted in positive outcomes for client and community groups.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Define the challenges facing professionals involved with community engagement in today's environment.
  • Better define the problem statement and formulate an appropriate engagement strategy in response.
  • Apply new techniques in engagement methodology and be better equipped to understand the impacts and opportunities of these various techniques.

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

Paul believes that transformative change can happen at any scale. He has lead projects ranging from a children’s playhouse to large community recreation centres. A skilled facilitator, Paul uses his extensive experience in community and stakeholder engagement to build consensus and create momentum on projects. Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Masters of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and gained experience abroad in Switzerland and Russia before joining HCMA. Paul has lectured, presented and worked extensively in communities of all sizes across Western Canada.

Marni believes great communities are shaped by the people who live, work and play in them, and loves to break down barriers that keep people from getting involved. She brings over 20 years of experience in stakeholder engagement, program management, and issues management. In her role, she helps ensures people’s voices are heard about what matters most to them. Prior to joining HCMA, Marni was a director at Context where she developed and led engagement programs for municipal projects across the Lower Mainland and the City of Calgary. Marni is a member of the IAP2 BC Chapter.
