RAIC Mourns the Passing of Dr. Kongjian Yu, 2025 RAIC International Prize Laureate

It is with profound sadness that the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) acknowledges the tragic loss of Dr. Kongjian Yu, founder and principal designer of Turenscape, who passed away in a plane crash in Brazil, as reported by international media.

Dr. Yu was the 2025 recipient of the RAIC International Prize, awarded to Turenscape in recognition of its transformative contributions to landscape architecture, ecological urbanism, and climate-resilient design. His passing marks a heartbreaking loss not only for RAIC and the international architectural community, but for all those committed to forging a more sustainable, regenerative future.

We’re excited to unveil a new collection of 200+ books at Edmonton Public Library. The RAIC Architecture for Young Readers collection, made possible through community sponsorship, features engaging titles like If I Built a House and Boxitects to spark curiosity about design and the built environment. 

Join the official launch celebration on October 5 at Stanley A. Milner Library (10:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) for World Architecture Day. The family-friendly event includes storytime, building challenges, and a 3D printing tiny house workshop. 

This initiative continues RAIC's mission to make architecture accessible to children, fostering critical thinking through inclusive design education.

Ramsden Park Community Recreation Centre Design Competition 
 

The City of Toronto has launched a two-stage international design competition to create a landmark downtown community recreation facility. This marks the first City of Toronto design competition held for a community recreation centre since 1987.

This competition is part of the City’s commitment to fostering design excellence and enhancing the public realm. Design teams from around the world are invited to imagine a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming destination while advancing global best practices in design and sustainability in alignment with Toronto Green Standards and the City’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy.
