RAIC Announces New Advisors to Professional Practice

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is excited to announce the addition of two distinguished professionals, Dr. Michael Karassowitsch and Susan Speigel, to the RAIC Advisors to Professional Practice (RAPP). This update broadens the expertise guiding the RAIC’s ongoing initiatives to support architectural practice across Canada.

Since its inception in 2023, RAPP has engaged the knowledge and experience of subject matter experts, including architects, educators, and collaborating professionals, to develop and maintain resources that promote excellence in architectural practice. By providing insights into the evolution and challenges of architecture, the RAPP informs advocacy efforts and enhances practice advisory services offered by the RAIC.

The RAIC is proud to welcome these new advisors and looks forward to the contributions they will make toward strengthening the profession.

The Alberta Association of Architects - Building Envelope Course

The Building Envelope Course provides a review of building science principles and best practices for successful building envelope design. The course features presentations by Dr. John Straube, Mark Chambers and Sathya Ramachandran.

Learning objectives:

  • Improve the ability of architects to competently and effectively design appropriate building envelopes.
  • Improve the ability of architects to understand their responsibilities and limitations regarding the provision of design, detailing, specification and field review services for building envelopes.
  • Improve the ability of architects to utilize good building envelope practices and recognize sources for ongoing technical support.
  • Understand the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) 2017 as it relates to the building envelope.

Open Call - Holcim Foundation Awards 2025
The world’s most significant competition for sustainable design and construction is calling for entries. The Swiss-based non-profit Holcim Foundation seeks client-supported projects of all scales in the late-stage design phase to be recognized from a global prize pool of USD 1M. Submissions are open until February 11, 2025, at 14:00 hrs UTC. 
 
The international competition has a long-standing history of awarding significant projects, including the BIG U in New York City by Bjarke Ingels Group and la Quebradora Waterpark in Mexico City by Taller Capital.
 
The competition is free to enter and is open to client-supported and commissioned projects in the detailed design phase that are yet to be realized. Projects already under construction are eligible, provided construction is not completed before February 11, 2025.
 
The Awards Ceremony will occur at the Foundation’s Venice Forum event on November 20, 2025, coinciding with the Venice Biennale of Architecture. As part of the prize, the winning teams will receive travel and accommodation to be part of the ceremony.
 
In addition to its flagship Awards program, the Holcim Foundation partners with academics and industry-leading practitioners to create educational opportunities and organizes events to facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices.
