Foreign-trained Architects

November 12, 2025

In partnership with the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (now known as the Regulatory Organizations of Architecture and the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), the RAIC received a substantial grant in 2010 from Employment & Skills Development Canada (ESDC) in order to streamline the process for foreign architects to immigrate and work within Canada.

The Broadly Experienced Foreign Architect (BEFA) Program was a $2-million project that was developed into a bilingual program to properly assess BEFA candidates against pan-Canadian standards of competency for practice in Canada. The program launched in 2012.

Through its role as a rassembleur or unifier of the profession, the RAIC managed the overall project to ensure that funds were administered effectively and efficiently.
