These scholarships provide financial assistance to students at the three schools of architecture in the Southwest Ontario region: University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, and the University of Waterloo.

Eligibility & Submission Rules

Background

For several years, the Southwest Ontario Chapter of the RAIC College of Fellows has donated the proceeds from its annual fundraising event to the RAIC Foundation, supporting its various awards programs and related administrative activities. In 2024, the SW Ontario Fellows decided to allocate a portion of these proceeds to a new set of scholarships aimed at benefiting students at the three accredited architecture schools in their region.

  • Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto
  • Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University
  • School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo.

In 2025, the SW Ontario Fellows chose to add this study abroad scholarships to those they had introduced in 2024.

Eligibility

These scholarships are open to students who require some financial assistance in order to be able to participate in a group study-abroad session organized by their school and accompanied by a faculty member.

Amount

Three study-abroad scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded annually, starting in 2026, until all the money in the fund is spent, as follows: one to a student from the University of Toronto, one to a student from Toronto Metropolitan University and one to a student from the University of Waterloo. The total amount of the scholarship will be paid to each recipient upon announcement of their selection.

Selection Criteria

The students applying for the Southwest Ontario COF Study-Abroad Scholarships must demonstrate to the selection committee that they are the most deserving based upon academic achievement and financial need.

Submission Requirements

• Identification and brief description of the study-abroad session that the applicant is planning to take part in
• Proof that the applicant has been selected to take part in this study-abroad session (such as a document issued by the school confirming their selection)
• Academic record of the applicant (such as an unofficial transcript from the school)
• Brief justification (150 words maximum) of the applicant’s financial need
• Letter of support from a member of the faculty

Adjudication

The RAIC Foundation Trustees will appoint a selection committee of three persons, which will include:
• Two Trustees of the RAIC Foundation
• A faculty member of an accredited Canadian school of architecture
The RAIC Foundation Trustees will also appoint a professional adviser, who will review the applications to verify that they are complete and meet the Submission requirements. The professional advisor will not be part of the selection committee.
