Vassilis Sgoutas

1934–2026

RAIC mourns the passing of Vassilis Sgoutas, an esteemed architect from Athens, Greece, and Honourary Fellow of the RAIC College. Sgoutas dedicated his career to advancing architecture as a force for social good.

A graduate of the University of Cape Town, he began his practice in Greece in 1961, completing significant projects across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, including hospitals, industrial facilities, and cultural developments. His work consistently reflected a deep concern for social and cultural sustainability.

As President of the International Union of Architects (UIA) from 1999 to 2002—and later as its Honourary President—Sgoutas championed initiatives addressing poverty, environmental responsibility, and accessibility. He launched the Architecture for the Disabled program—now known as Architecture for All—and served on key European committees promoting inclusive design. In recognition of his commitment, the UIA established the Vassilis Sgoutas Prize, awarded to architects improving living conditions in impoverished regions.

Sgoutas exemplified the profession’s responsibility to create a more humane and sustainable built environment. His legacy will endure through his projects, his leadership, and the countless lives touched by his vision.
