The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is introducing changes to its Life Membership program to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the organization and reinforce the prestige of this recognition. These changes have been reviewed and approved by the RAIC Board of Directors.
Why this change is necessary
For many years, Life Membership has been awarded automatically to full members who reached one of the following milestones:
- 40 years of continuous membership, or
- Age 75 or older with at least 10 years of membership.
With approximately 50 members qualifying each year, the program has grown to a scale that presents financial sustainability challenges for the RAIC. At the same time, the RAIC must ensure that Life Membership remains a prestigious and meaningful honour for those who demonstrate exceptional service and commitment.
What is changing
Effective immediately, Life Membership will no longer be automatic. Life Membership will transition to a nomination-based process.
What this means in practice
- A maximum of three Life Memberships may be awarded annually, at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
- All nominations will be reviewed and approved by the RAIC Board of Directors.
- Life Membership will recognize sustained, distinguished contributions aligned with RAIC values and priorities.
Next steps
A detailed FAQ will be made available on the RAIC website to support members through this transition.
