Lead Architect
Job Description
PETERSON DESIGN GROUP INC.
Peterson Design Group Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering firm based in Thunder Bay, Ontario, proudly serving communities across the region with thoughtful, resilient, and sustainably grounded design. PDG brings a fresh, modern perspective to the industry—one rooted in technical excellence, collaboration, and a deep respect for the people and places we design for. Driven by a clear commitment to reviving and elevating architecture in Northwestern Ontario, our team approaches every project with a forward‑looking dedication to strengthening the region’s built environment and expanding what is possible for northern communities.
Originally founded more than four decades ago, the firm entered a new era in 2025 when it was acquired and revitalized under new ownership. Today, PDG blends the strength of its long‑standing legacy with a renewed commitment to innovation, community partnership, and high‑quality professional service. Our team provides integrated architectural design and structural engineering, fully coordinated with mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines, allowing us to deliver cohesive, efficient, and well‑orchestrated solutions for projects of every scale.
Rooted in legacy and driven by revolution, PDG leads the next chapter of a long‑standing firm known for “Getting Things Done.” We honour the craftsmanship and expertise that built its foundation while forging a future that promotes growth in our industry and communities, improving both social and physical spaces through architecture and engineering.
Our team has the expertise to deliver groundbreaking, sustainable projects that push the boundaries of engineering and architecture, while also efficiently delivering standard building projects with precision, reliability, and a deep commitment to meeting client needs and timelines.
WORKING IN THUNDER BAY
Thunder Bay offers the rare combination of major “big‑city” growth opportunities and a relaxed, outdoor‑focused lifestyle—making it an ideal place to build both a career and a life. The region is experiencing significant momentum with large‑scale infrastructure projects such as the Waasigan and Greenstone transmission line expansions bringing hundreds of megawatts of new capacity to support industrial and community growth, the new Lakehead–Guelph veterinary school and large‑animal training facility under construction to address Northern Ontario’s growing agri‑food and animal‑health needs, and multi‑phase waterfront redevelopment creating new commercial, residential, and tourism opportunities along the city’s expanding marina and Pool 6 district. Thunder Bay is also emerging as a critical hub in Canada’s EV and battery supply chain through major lithium refining and mineral‑processing projects poised to bring hundreds of jobs and national strategic importance to the region. Yet despite these big‑city opportunities, residents enjoy a quieter pace, affordability, and instant access to hiking, skiing, paddling, and Lake Superior’s world‑class outdoor recreation—truly offering the best of both worlds. Remote‑work options are available depending on project needs, and relocation assistance is available for the right candidate.
THE ROLE: LEAD ARCHITECT
As our Lead Architect, you will spearhead the development and growth of our architectural division, overseeing a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, and institutional projects from concept through construction. This role is ideal for a driven architectural professional who wants to take charge, shape a practice, and lead with vision. You will guide project teams, collaborate closely with engineers and clients, and ensure all deliverables meet the highest standards of design excellence, technical accuracy, and regulatory compliance. The position offers significant autonomy — including flexibility in scheduling and workflow — and the opportunity to influence the direction of a growing architecture and engineering firm. Remote‑work options are available depending on project needs, and relocation assistance can be provided for candidates moving to Thunder Bay.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed Architect with the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) — required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience working with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and applying it across residential, commercial, and institutional projects.
- Experience leading projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and communicating with clients, consultants, and contractors.
- Class G driver’s license (or ability to obtain upon relocation) for site visits and travel as required.
- Strong understanding of project management, building systems, construction detailing, and permitting processes.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, make informed decisions, and take ownership of project outcomes.
- Proficiency with industry‑standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup, and other relevant design and coordination tools.
- A collaborative mindset with the confidence to lead a division, mentor team members, and support firm growth.
Salary Range: $105,000 to $140,000 annually based on experience.
WHAT WE OFFER:
We offer an environment defined by professionalism, integrity, and trust — a place where talented people collaborate with respect and genuine enthusiasm for the work. You will have wide creative and operational freedom to shape and lead the Architecture division, with the autonomy to direct projects, refine processes, and influence the future of the practice. Our team comprises high-performing, thoughtful professionals who bring excellence to their craft and contribute to a harmonious, collegial culture
A comprehensive benefits package is available and can be tailored based on the candidate’s needs. We also provide competitive compensation with the potential for year‑end bonuses and future profit‑sharing as the division grows. Lifelong learning and professional development are strongly encouraged and supported — whether through continuing education, conferences, certifications, or new areas of exploration within the field.
We believe strongly in a well-rounded life — not as a slogan, but as part of how we operate. The firm is structured so that you can pursue ambitious professional goals while still having the time and space for family, travel, outdoor activities, and personal passions. In short, this is a place where you can lead boldly, grow meaningfully, and enjoy a fulfilling life both inside and outside the office.
