The mission of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design is to educate students, prepare professionals, and cultivate scholars. Through approximately 100 faculty and staff, the Faculty offers its 1,500 students a range of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs in architecture, landscape architecture, visual studies (studio-based and critical practice), forestry, and urban design. The strengths and research interests of the Faculty’s departments, research centres, and labs include history and theory, computation and fabrication, health and society, and technology and the environment. The Faculty’s new home, the historic One Spadina Crescent, has been transformed and expanded into a leading venue and hub for students, scholars, and professionals interested in creating more culturally engaged, ecologically sustainable, socially just, and artfully conceived environments.
Reporting to the Vice-President and Provost, the Dean will be a member of the senior leadership of the University. Supported by Associate and Assistant Deans, the Chief Administrative Officer, and program directors, the Dean is responsible for collaboratively establishing the Faculty’s strategy in accordance with the University’s strategic priorities; fostering and supporting excellence in teaching, research, creative practice, and service; enhancing the Faculty’s domestic and international reputation and profile; and building relationships with students, faculty, staff, and a variety of external stakeholders, including alumni, donors and funders, governments, and institutional, corporate, and community partners and supporters. The Dean will engage members of the Faculty in supporting a positive student experience within an inclusive culture that embraces all dimensions of diversity. The Dean will facilitate interdisciplinary initiatives across the Faculty’s diverse units that span the natural and built environments, design, and visual studies, and will identify solutions and develop academic and administrative planning that advance and support the vision for the Faculty.
The next Dean of the Faculty will be an internationally respected administrator, scholar, and professor of a pertinent discipline – a leader with reputation and capacity commensurate with the goals of the Daniels Faculty and the global importance of its work. With award-winning faculty, a new building, a strong financial position, well-established community relationships, and highly competitive programs that attract excellent students, the Faculty is well positioned to further enhance its international reputation for teaching and research, and to fortify its standing among the world’s leading Faculties of its kind.
