This also means that our process will continue to change and adapt, as we move forward in the journey. It also recognizes that each and every experience is unique, it is the continued opportunity for Indigenous voices to exist at the table and at all sides of the table. We see this influence already with the increased number of Indigenous professionals and projects across the country. I hope that we continue to work on this process, we continue to listen and learn. Learning new languages reminds me that language doesn\u2019t just carry meaning\u2013it encodes values, knowledges, and ways of knowing and being \u2026all of which shape how we understand the world around us and our roles and responsibilities in relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Unfortunately, of the more than 60 distinct Indigenous languages spoken across northern Turtle Island, colonially known as Canada ALL are now critically endangered due to violent actions of the past AND to harmful patterns and biases that persist across systems and structures, working to silencing them still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is the RAIC\u2019s work on truth &amp; reconciliation important, in my perspective?<\/strong><br>As many Knowledge Keepers have said, in far better words: we can\u2019t make good decisions about how to move forward, if we don\u2019t first understand where we are\u2026 and how we got here. Learning\u2026and unlearning core truths\u2014truths about the lands, waters and living systems we share\u2014vital relations that sustain us all\u2026truths about the distinct Indigenous peoples who have stewarded thriving reciprocal relationships with them since Time Immemorial; and truths about colonial, capitalist patterns \u2013past and present\u2013 harming these relations and causing the crises we all now face. Learning and unlearning these truths are foundational responsibilities for us ALL\u2014 but especially for all of us practicing environmental design\u2026as our work literally shapes these<br>relationships for current &amp; future generations\u2026and for better or for worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does \u201cReconciliation is a journey, not a checkbox\u201d mean to me? <\/strong><br>A fan of language and definitions, I think of how the Truth &amp; Reconciliation Commission (TRC) defines reconciliation: as &#8220;an ongoing process of establishing and maintaining respectful relationships&#8221;. As such, inherently, it is never complete, but rather occurs through the doing\u2014through stewarding relationships of mutual respect, responsibility, and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we&#8217;re all on this journey, the heavy-lifting required to redress wrongs done is work required of non-Indigenous peoples; as it&#8217;s our collective actions\u2014past and present\u2014that have created, and continue to perpetuate, compounding harms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the TRC, and many others, this work requires: acknowledging harms and wrongs past and present; recognizing and respecting inherent Indigenous rights\u2014AND the distinct Indigenous laws, values, and protocols that ground them; AND taking concrete actions to uphold them all\u2014using the UN Declaration as a baseline\u2014so that we can, together, create just and equitable paths forward: paths rooted in mutual respect, mutual understanding, co-designed for mutual flourishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do I hope the architectural profession \/ future generations will carry forward?<\/strong><br>While a glib reading is that talk of a journey is just words, shifting the words we use and the meanings we hold in relation can shift understandings; which, in turn, can shift behaviour and norms. Mais ultimement, si l\u2019environnement b\u00e2ti peut mieux soutenir les communaut\u00e9s autochtones en priorit\u00e9, tout en exprimant avec respect la riche diversit\u00e9 des cultures pr\u00e9sentes au pays, nous pourrons tous vivre dans des lieux plus profond\u00e9ment li\u00e9s au territoire et aux traditions qui l\u2019habitent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le fait que de plus en plus de jeunes des Premi\u00e8res Nations, M\u00e9tis et Inuit s\u2019int\u00e9ressent \u00e0 l\u2019architecture comme parcours professionnel d\u00e9montre que ce travail est porteur de sens et d\u2019impact. Ce qui m\u2019enthousiasme le plus, ce sont les prochaines g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de concepteurs autochtones qui fa\u00e7onneront notre monde d\u2019une mani\u00e8re qui honore v\u00e9ritablement tous nos anc\u00eatres, nos descendants et l\u2019ensemble de nos relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De plus, l\u2019architecture est, par nature, une profession fond\u00e9e sur la cr\u00e9ation de relations et offre une voie concr\u00e8te pour se rassembler et construire ensemble, dans le respect. En mati\u00e8re de r\u00e9conciliation, c\u2019est quelque chose de tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quelles exp\u00e9riences, dans ce parcours, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les plus significatives pour vous, et pourquoi?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La cr\u00e9ation du GTA a \u00e9t\u00e9, pour moi, l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment le plus significatif. Elle a essentiellement men\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de former UNCEDED, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisi pour repr\u00e9senter le Canada \u00e0 la Biennale de Venise de 2018. Cette initiative a offert \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 autochtone en architecture l\u2019occasion de trouver sa voix au sein de la profession, ainsi qu\u2019un r\u00e9seau de soutien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s enrichissant de constater que l\u2019IRAC reconna\u00eet d\u00e9sormais de fa\u00e7on constante l\u2019importance de la participation des A\u00een\u00e9s et des communaut\u00e9s aux conf\u00e9rences \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019elles se d\u00e9placent \u00e0 travers le pays. Certains pourraient critiquer cet engagement comme \u00e9tant performatif, mais je ne partage pas cet avis. Elle commence par la reconnaissance des v\u00e9rit\u00e9s et des torts du pass\u00e9, ainsi que des injustices syst\u00e9miques subies par les peuples autochtones partout au Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elle implique des actions concr\u00e8tes visant \u00e0 r\u00e9parer les torts et \u00e0 r\u00e9tablir la confiance afin de b\u00e2tir des relations significatives et respectueuses entre les peuples autochtones et non autochtones.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En tant que personne \u0153uvrant dans le service public et en architecture, je reconnais que la r\u00e9conciliation doit \u00eatre int\u00e9gr\u00e9e aux structures m\u00eames que nous concevons et aux syst\u00e8mes que nous soutenons. Cela signifie \u00e9couter attentivement les voix autochtones, respecter les savoirs traditionnels et cr\u00e9er des espaces \u2014 physiques comme relationnels \u2014 qui honorent la pr\u00e9sence, les valeurs et la culture autochtones.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La r\u00e9conciliation n\u2019est pas une case \u00e0 cocher. C\u2019est un parcours continu qui exige humilit\u00e9, apprentissage et, surtout, d\u00e9sapprentissage. Il s\u2019agit de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 mes propres biais, de remettre en question le statu quo et de d\u00e9fendre des changements significatifs. Ce parcours ne se limite pas aux moments de c\u00e9r\u00e9monie ou de reconnaissance lors de journ\u00e9es comme la Journ\u00e9e nationale de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de la r\u00e9conciliation, mais se joue dans les d\u00e9cisions quotidiennes qui fa\u00e7onnent notre avenir collectif.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019architecture, en tant qu\u2019art de fa\u00e7onner les lieux dans le temps et l\u2019espace, poss\u00e8de un potentiel immense pour favoriser une transformation significative sur le chemin de la r\u00e9conciliation. Je demeure optimiste quant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution de notre profession au-del\u00e0 des repr\u00e9sentations superficielles de l\u2019autochtone, et j\u2019esp\u00e8re que nous favoriserons une conception inspir\u00e9e des savoirs autochtones \u2014 fond\u00e9e sur un engagement v\u00e9ritable aupr\u00e8s des voix autochtones et align\u00e9e sur les valeurs, les besoins et les aspirations des peuples autochtones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La r\u00e9conciliation est une question de cr\u00e9ation de relations. Il est rapidement devenu \u00e9vident que les conditions auxquelles sa communaut\u00e9 faisait face ne \u00ab surviennent \u00bb pas simplement \u2014 elles \u00e9taient le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019un effort soutenu de la part d\u2019institutions ainsi que de professionnels form\u00e9s et hautement r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Lire la r\u00e9ponse compl\u00e8te<\/summary>\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Une longue mission d\u2019enqu\u00eate a culmin\u00e9 par un voyage dans la communaut\u00e9 voisine accessible uniquement par avion, Kashechewan, qui faisait face \u00e0 des d\u00e9fis similaires, \u00e0 titre d\u2019invit\u00e9e du d\u00e9put\u00e9 Charlie Angus. Boulevers\u00e9e par ce que j\u2019y ai vu, je suis revenue convaincue que les architectes avaient l\u2019obligation morale de soutenir celles et ceux qui doivent composer avec les cons\u00e9quences d\u2019une conception irr\u00e9fl\u00e9chie, voire dangereuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019IRAC, qui a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 l\u2019excellence en architecture tout au long de son histoire par l\u2019entremise de ses programmes de prix, peut \u00e9galement attirer l\u2019attention sur les parties de l\u2019environnement b\u00e2ti qui \u00e9taient, par conception, loin d\u2019\u00eatre exemplaires. Je consid\u00e9rais que cela \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement vrai pour les environnements qui, pourrait-on dire, exprimaient sous forme b\u00e2tie un m\u00e9pris envers une population pr\u00e9cise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De mauvaises solutions sont souvent cr\u00e9\u00e9es par des personnes bien intentionn\u00e9es mais ext\u00e9rieures aux communaut\u00e9s. Je suis une alli\u00e9e issue de familles immigrantes finlandaise et italienne de premi\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, dont le parcours en architecture a \u00e9t\u00e9 fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 par l\u2019engagement communautaire et la conception participative. Au fil des ann\u00e9es, j\u2019ai eu le privil\u00e8ge d\u2019apprendre aupr\u00e8s de coll\u00e8gues, de mentors et de communaut\u00e9s autochtones dont les enseignements ont profond\u00e9ment transform\u00e9 ma compr\u00e9hension de la conception et de la responsabilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour moi, le travail de l\u2019IRAC en mati\u00e8re de v\u00e9rit\u00e9, de r\u00e9conciliation et de relations respectueuses est essentiel, car il aide notre profession \u00e0 d\u00e9sapprendre des habitudes d\u2019extraction et de contr\u00f4le, et \u00e0 \u00e9voluer vers des pratiques fond\u00e9es sur la r\u00e9ciprocit\u00e9, le respect et l\u2019\u00e9coute.
