The Opportunity

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Architectural Science in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Ryerson University welcomes applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2021 subject to final budgetary approval.

Project Management is one of three concentrations offered in the Department of Architectural Science. Integrated with Architecture and Building Science in the first three years of our undergraduate Bachelor of Architectural Science Program, students may choose to concentrate in Project Management in the final undergraduate year. The Department proposes to launch a Masters in Project Management in the Built Environment program in 2022. Students in the department benefit from the downtown location of our campus and the strong and dynamic AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) sector.

Project Management in the Built Environment is a unique sub-discipline focused on improving the delivery of building projects in the design, construction and/or operation phases. In the context of increased adoption of digital and “smart” technologies within the built environment as well as the climate crisis, the AEC industry is changing dramatically, and the processes used to design and construct buildings are rapidly evolving. Our proposed graduate program (MASc, M.PM) seeks to address this changing context.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, including mentoring and supervision of students, innovative and independent research or creative activity that is externally funded and produces cutting-edge, high quality results and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

Qualifications

The capacity to speak knowledgeably as a practitioner within the AEC industry is critical to this position. Experience in a leadership role managing projects - either as a practitioner (architectural or engineering design, construction, facility management, or similar) or as a researcher working in close collaboration with AEC industry partner(s) - is thus required. A Master’s degree in Management, Project Management, Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field is also required. An advanced post-professional degree beyond these minimum requirements ( i.e. a second Masters in a specialty area, a Doctoral degree, or a Post-professional Masters in Architecture, a Doctoral degree will be an asset.

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:

Demonstrated capacity or potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and suitability for teaching in the proposed new graduate program of Project Management in the Built Environment, as evidenced by a teaching dossier. Teaching excellence as demonstrated by, but not limited to, case-based teaching, role play facilitation, or similar methods is an asset, as is experience teaching in an architectural, comprehensive design studio.

Demonstrated sound expertise in one or more of the following related areas of project management in the built environment:
i) Low Carbon/Net-Zero Energy Buildings (e.g. Smart Buildings, Sustainable Design and Construction practices);
ii) IT in Construction (e.g. BIM, advanced visualization (AR/VR), site data collection (photogrammetry, LiDar); iii) Construction Management (e.g. wearables for site safety, Virtual Construction Practices),
iv) Facility management (Smart Buildings, predictive controls, Ongoing Commissioning),
v) Data analytics as applied to building design, construction, and operation,
vi) integrated project delivery, or
vii) novel cost and schedule management approaches.

Demonstrated application of digital and/or “smart” technologies to improve complex building project delivery and/or resultant building performance is preferred

Capacity to maintain a strong emerging research profile that demonstrates creativity and evidence of impact.

Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and the improvement of the built environment.

Advanced knowledge of key project management practices such as integrated project planning, cost and schedule management, etc. A Project Management Professional (PMP) designation or other accreditation as a project manager specific to the AEC industry is an asset.

a teaching statement identifying your teaching philosophy and where/how your strength in teaching might enhance our Department (up to 3 pages);

-a teaching dossier and results of teaching evaluations.
