Les inscriptions sont fermées pour cet événement.
For the month of November, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of Wood Architecture and Construction.

Wood Buildings – Moving to Mainstream in Canada
Date: November 6, 2019
Presenter: Angelique Pilon, PMP, LEED AP BD+C
And Penny Martyn, MRAIC, MAIBC, LEED AP

SESSION:
In Canada we are uniquely placed to be able to build with wood in a way that is more environmentally sensitive and can help meet the new challenges of climate change and urban growth. Pushing the boundaries of wood as a structural material will reduce the carbon signature of buildings as well as providing livable, affordable and culturally appropriate solutions for our urban environment. This presentation will investigate the use of timber construction in several different case studies from the University of British Columbia’s campus, including the 18 storey Brock Commons student residence.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Practical applications of cross laminated timber, composite wood structures and hybrid structural designs
  • Project management and design techniques that support innovative construction methods
  • The advantages of wood as a sustainable building material particularly its low embodied carbon signature and cultural significance

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

Angelique leads the Urban Innovation Research group within the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI), which manages a portfolio of interdisciplinary research programs focused on sustainable buildings, urban development and creating the cites of the future. She develops partnerships that take advantage of UBC’s growing role as a model for urban sustainability, utilizing projects such as the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability and the Brock Commons Tallwood House, as sources for innovation and learning. She holds both a Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Architecture and has professional experience in firms in both Canada and the United States.

Penny oversees the development and implementation of green building policies and procedures for new buildings at UBC. She is a registered Architect and brings her experience working on sustainable buildings in private practice to her role on campus. Her work covers campus academic buildings and residential projects in the neighbourhoods, and is currently focused on UBC’s first Green Building Plan. In private practice Penny worked on research, design and construction of leading sustainable institutional projects, including the VanDusen Garden Visitor Centre, in Vancouver BC, which is LEED platinum and targeting both Living Building Certification and net zero energy design.
