Date: March 27, 2019
Experience Level: General
Presenter: David Clusiau, B.E.S., B.Arch., OAA, FRAIC, LEED AP

SESSIONS:

This presentation will explore two related adaptive-reuse case studies: The preservation and restoration of the former Bank of Montreal (a “classified” heritage building) and its transformation into the Sir John A MacDonald Building, now a conference facility and room of state for the House of Commons, as well as the restoration and transformation of the “recognized” Wellington Building (previously the Canadian Headquarters of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.) into swing space for the House of Commons. They will be explored in terms of design excellence benefits and technical challenges.

Other areas to be covered:

  • The urban history and context of the two projects located on the same block across from Parliament Hill
  • Project significance from a heritage character point of view of the existing FHBRO “classified” and 1932 RAIC medal winning Bank of Montreal, and the FHBRO “recognized” Wellington Building
  • The program and overall design approach for both buildings, with consideration for:

Its basis on an analysis of the underlying organization of the existing
The restoration of the heritage components
The leveraging of their heritage qualities in the service of the new use
The new interventions and their relationship to the existing

     Seismic upgrades
     Mechanical systems
     Acoustical considerations
