UNCEDED: Voices of the Land, Canada’s official entry to the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, has received the distinguished Honorary Patronage of the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. The project, led by Douglas J. Cardinal, FRAIC, Blackfoot, also features an Indigenous team of 17 architects. It is co-curated by Gerald McMaster, Plains Cree and member of the Siksika First Nation, currently Canada Research Chair at OCAD University, and David Fortin, MRAIC, Metis Nation of Ontario and Director of Laurentian University McEwen School of Architecture. RAIC members can support UNCEDED by visiting the project’s fundraising page at Indiegogo.
UNCEDED will present Indigenous Architecture to the global community with an immersive and interactive exhibition which opens May 24. They will be celebrating, on the world stage the Indigenous contribution to architecture. UNCEDED will be the first time that the world will see the combination of Indigenous teachings, technology, and the paradigm-shifting architecture of contemporary Indigenous people. An important component of the project is the inclusion of Indigenous students of architecture as part of the Biennale. The students will be on the site, offer tours, translate Indigenous languages, and respond to visitor questions. The following students were selected and will be mentored and coached by student coordinator James Bird.
