Architects from 16 cities named 2017 Fellows

A designer of the Vancouver SkyTrain; a Toronto living wall pioneer; a Montreal expert on heritage materials conservation; and two Winnipeg architects reimagining their city are among the Canadian architects to be named 2017 Fellows.

Representing Canada coast-to-coast, the 37 new Fellows come from Saint John, NB; Halifax, NS; St. John's, NL; Montreal, QC; Brampton, ON; St. Catharine’s, ON; Toronto, ON; Hamilton, ON; Ottawa, ON; Winnipeg, MB; Saskatoon, SK; Calgary, AB; Edmonton, AB; Vancouver, BC; Burnaby, B.C. and Victoria, BC.

Toronto couple to receive RAIC 2017 Young Architect Award

A pair of Toronto architects who are designing contemporary infill buildings that reflect an interest in materials and textures are the recipients of the 2017 Young Architect Award given by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC.)

After studying and working in the United States for more than 10 years, Andrew Batay-Csorba, and Jodi Batay-Csorba moved from Los Angeles to Toronto in 2010, where they established Batay-Csorba Architects, a three-person firm, in 2012.

 


 

 

 

RAIC announces recipients of the President’s Medal for Media in Architecture

A three-member jury selected Annmarie Adams, FRAIC, a McGill University professor, for a two-page article that synthesizes the history of Canadian hospital architecture over the past 165 years. The article, titled Canadian hospital architecture: how we got here, was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal of March 15, 2016.

The jury also honoured John Bentley Mays, who wrote in the Globe and Mail newspaper on architecture, in addition to numerous articles for Azure, Canadian Architect and other magazines. For four decades, until his death in September 2016, Mays was one of Canada’s most insightful, intelligent and influential observers of architecture.

 


 

 

Ontario Place Cinesphere and Pods and CN Tower receive 2017 Prix du XXe siècle

The RAIC, in partnership with The National Trust for Canada, announces the Ontario Place Cinesphere and Pods and the CN Tower in Toronto as recipients of the 2017 Prix du XXe siècle – recognized for their enduring excellence and national significance to Canada’s architectural legacy.

The RAIC is encouraging members of participate in an international survey on greenhouse gas reduction.

The survey, by the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment, will provide a perspective on the effectiveness of actions that may reduce the emission of greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.

 

The International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE) is a not-for-profit organization based in Ottawa. Leading Canadian architects form iiSBE Canada.

This monograph on rzlbd’s work focuses on the built projects over the last five years. rzlbd is a boutique architectural practice based in Toronto founded in 2010 by architect Reza Aliabadi, MRAIC.
