Submit for the 2018 RAIC Awards: Deadline January 19

Awards currently open for submissions/nominations include the Emerging Architectural Practice Award, the Architectural Firm Award, the Prix du XXe Siècle, and the Young Architect Award.

The RAIC is also calling for nominations for the 2018 recipient of its highest honour, the Gold Medal.

Past winners include John and Patricia Patkau, Arthur Erickson, Dan Hanganu, Bing Thom, Phyllis Lambert, George Baird and others. Please consider nominating someone in Canada who deserves recognition for their outstanding achievement in architecture.

Members of the College of Fellows are invited to nominate their peers for the position of Dean of the College of Fellows. The term of the current Dean, J. Robert Thibodeau, FIRAC, of Vancouver, ends June 1.

The Dean’s responsibilities include management of regional chapters, committee memberships, and national screening co-ordination.

The Dean will serve a three-year term which begins at the College of Fellows Annual Meeting in June 2018.

The deadline for nominations is February 26.

RAIC a proud supporter of UNCEDED

The RAIC is proud to be an institutional partner for UNCEDED, Canada’s entry to the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.

UNCEDED will emphasize and celebrate the work of Indigenous architects and designers throughout Turtle Island. It is grounded in the legacy of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report.

The exhibition will be led by internationally renowned architect, philosopher, human rights activist, and Officer of the Order of Canada Douglas Cardinal, FRAIC, along with Anishnawbe Elders and Indigenous Co-curators Gerald McMaster, and architect David Fortin, MRAIC. Fortin is the Director of the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University.

Venice exhibition invites Canadian participants

For a minimum of 15,000 Euros, Canadian architects or firms can participate in an exhibition in Venice that will run at the same time as the 2018 Venice Biennale in Architecture, May 26 to November 25.

The exhibition, TIME-SPACE-EXISTENCE, is organized by the GAA Foundation, a Dutch non-profit foundation. It will be shown at the European Cultural Centre at Palazzo Mora and Palazzo Bembo as well as two public gardens. Admission is free, and about 300,000 visitors are expected.

A solo presentation in a room costs 1,700 euros per square metre. The minimum is 15,000 Euros for a shared space, e.g., a wall of about four to five metres long in a room with another architect. This includes set-up, maintenance, dismantling and pre-view parties. Set-up starts in April.

“We like to show current developments, thoughts, ideas and even dreams in architecture. Therefore we bring together an international group of architects with different cultural backgrounds and who are in different stages of their career, established architects next to architects whose projects might be less known,” says exhibition organizer Valeria Romagnini.

Save the date for the 2018 Festival of Architecture!

Co-hosted by the RAIC and the Architects’ Association of New Brunswick, the festival promises pertinent continuing education sessions, engaging tours, celebratory events with Atlantic hospitality, and internationally-renowned speakers such as John Leroux, Diébédo Francis Kéré, and Odile Decq.

RAIC Foundation welcomes Executive Director

The RAIC Foundation has hired Jim Taggart, FRAIC, of Vancouver as its new Executive Director.

“On behalf of the Trustees of the RAIC Foundation, I am pleased to welcome Jim Taggart, FRAIC, as our Executive Director,” says Foundation Chair Stuart Howard, PP/FRAIC. “Jim has been a long-term advocate of architecture and architects, as a practicing architect, educator, and writer. I look forward to working with Jim on the Foundation’s many programs.”

RAIC members are invited to submit their projects for the Prix Versailles 2018. This prize comprises a series of awards for the most remarkable commercial structures, from the point of view of both the interior and exterior architecture.

There are four categories within the Prix: shops & stores, shopping malls, hotels, and restaurants.
