Webday Wednesdays - Mass Timber and Moisture Protection | Royal Architectural Institute of Canada

Webday Wednesdays - Mass Timber and Moisture Protection

Registration is closed for this event
For the month of November, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of Wood Architecture and Construction.

Mass Timber and Moisture Protection
Date: November 27, 2019
Presenter: Jesse Moore, P. Eng.

SESSION:
One advantage of wood as a building material is that it can dry out after wetting, but there are limits to this capacity. As we build more mass timber structures in Ontario, we need to consider protection from moisture exposure before, during, and after construction. Jesse Moore from RDH Building Science will talk about wood wetting and drying and then discuss the steps that should be taken early in the project to integrate moisture protection into the design and construction process.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Review building science fundamentals and how they relate to mass timber buildings.
  • Analyze factors that contribute to moisture risk and durability for mass timber buildings.
  • Determine effective design strategies for controlling moisture in mass timber buildings.
  • Describe approaches for protecting mass timber during and after construction.

Jesse Moore, P.Eng., is a building science engineer with a background in civil engineering and significant experience in rehabilitation and new construction projects. Jesse works out of RDH's Toronto office, where he has contributed to the team's knowledge and experience related to mass timber buildings.
