Affordable Multi-Residential Passive Buildings - Learning from Experience

SESSION:
This presentation will share the experience both designing and constructing Passive House affordable housing projects across Ontario. Construction types range from adaptive reuse of a concrete and steel structure to non-combustible new construction to a prefab wood wall systems. The session will include lessons learned and a discussion on how Passive House design can be a tool to meet both affordability targets for developers and climate change targets for municipalities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:
- Describe the five principles of Passive House design
- Discuss the cost implications of high-performance Passive House design on project cost
- Analyze a building envelope on a construction site for effectiveness from a Passive House perspective
Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit
Emma Cubitt is a Hamilton-based architect. Originally from Chicago, her passion for livable small spaces, affordable housing, and sustainability have helped create over 500 units of affordable housing either built or under construction in the past decade. She has designed six mixed-use Passive House projects in Ontario, with three under construction.
