Webday Wednesdays - Advanced Building Envelopes Simplified: Four Control Layers

Registration is closed for this event
For the month of May, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of Advanced Building Envelopes.

Advanced Building Envelopes Simplified: Four Control Layers
Date: May 15, 2019
Presenter: Kathleen Narbonne

SESSION:
Undoubtedly, high-performance wall assemblies are required in order to achieve increased energy efficiency and reduced operational carbon in buildings. But before we look at advanced building envelopes, we need to understand the components that make up a wall assembly and how those components function in order to keep the outside out and the inside dry. We call these components the four control layers (weather, air, vapour and thermal). These control layers are required for every wall assembly but can become confusing when working with advanced wall assemblies. It is important that we understand these control layers in depth in order to design high-performance wall assemblies that function as they are intended. This session will focus on defining and identifying the four control layers and provide examples of these layers within four different advanced wall assemblies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Explain the function and purpose of the four control layers.
  • Identify the location and appropriate materials of the control layers within a wall assembly.
  • Design a high-performance wall assembly using knowledge of the four control layers.

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

Kathleen has a blended background of architectural design and building science that provides a holistic understanding of construction. Driven by environmental concerns, she completed a Masters degree in Sustainability and Adaptation of the Built Environment at the Centre for Alternative Technology. She believes that sustainability is a lifestyle and strives to integrate this into every aspect of living.
