SESSIONS:
This presentation will explore two related adaptive-reuse case studies: The preservation and restoration of the former Bank of Montreal (a “classified” heritage building) and its transformation into the Sir John A MacDonald Building, now a conference facility and room of state for the House of Commons, as well as the restoration and transformation of the “recognized” Wellington Building (previously the Canadian Headquarters of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.) into swing space for the House of Commons. They will be explored in terms of design excellence benefits and technical challenges.
Other areas to be covered:
Its basis on an analysis of the underlying organization of the existing
The restoration of the heritage components
The leveraging of their heritage qualities in the service of the new use
The new interventions and their relationship to the existing
Seismic upgrades
Mechanical systems
Acoustical considerations
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:
1) Explain the challenges and architectural rewards of rehabilitating significant historical buildings in the service of new government uses.
2) Summarize the technical challenges and innovative solutions used to bring these buildings up to contemporary standards and meet the requirements of the new use.
3) Recognize similarities and differences in the approaches taken for each case study.
