With the support of our generous donors, we had an exciting 2022, launching two new awards and entering into relationships with other like-minded organizations.
Vince Catalli Scholarship for Sustainable Architecture Innovation
This scholarship, open to students from all twelve accredited architecture schools in Canada, was awarded for the first time in 2022. Funded by an endowment from Vince Catalli, and managed by the RAICF, the winner of the inaugural scholarship was Raechal Hamilton of Laurentian University for her project Low Carbon Living: An Alternative (Sub)urban Housing Framework for a Rapidly Growing City.
Raechal’s proposal offers a new medium density courtyard typology to replace carbon intensive, low density suburban sprawl. The runner up for this award was Kevin Jihoon Jo, from the University of Manitoba, whose symbiosis City project transforms a disused railyard into a hub for urban agriculture.
Arts and Letters Club of Toronto Foundation Architectural Conservation Award
Also awarded for the first time in 2022, this award is funded annually by the ALCTF and managed by RAICF. The inaugural winner was Fiona Hamilton of Dalhousie University. Her project ‘Obsolescence as Opportunity.’ offers a toolkit for the conservation and adaptive reuse of a century old warehouse structure in Saint John NB, revitalizing both the building and its associated urban spaces.
RAIC IP Student Scholarships
Donations to RAICF fund the student essay writing contest that parallels the bi-annual RAIC International Prize cycle. In 2022, $5000 scholarships went to three winners: Lewis Canning – Dalhousie University; Fabio Lima – University de Montréal and Jesse Martyn – University of BC.
Partnership with Indspire: Building Brighter Futures
Donations also enable us to fund scholarships through Indspire, a national organization that provides financial support to Indigenous students. Our donations are directed to those pursuing a career in architecture and are matched by the federal government, doubling their impact.
Partnership with the Canadian Architectural Students Association (CASA)
In 2022, we reached out to CASA, the organization that represents and connects students at the 12 accredited schools of architecture across the country. With the shared goal of supporting the next generation of architects in Canada, we jointly promoted the RAICF awards program, significantly increasing overall submissions.
On behalf of the students, interns and young architects it supports, RAICF thanks all those who made donations in 2022, and looks forward to working with them all again in the coming year.
